More Than New Holland
Holland, Michigan, stands out as a hub for craft beer enthusiasts, largely thanks to the statewide popularity of one iconic brewery: New Holland Brewing. Similar to Founders, Odd Side, or Pigeon Hill, New Holland has cemented its reputation as a must-visit in West Michigan’s beer scene. With their brewpubs and spirit-tasting rooms expanding to new locations, New Holland continues to bring its celebrated creations to more fans across the state.
Our Brewing Company
What I ordered: Shandy

While New Holland Brewing is a giant for craft beer in Holland, it’s far from the only brewery worth exploring. Within a short walk, you’ll find several others, including Our Brewing Company—a smaller operation that rivals New Holland in community vibe and character, if not in size.
Since opening its doors in 2012, the nanobrewery has cultivated an atmosphere that immediately draws you in. The walls are covered with dark, uniquely themed portraits, many being quirky versions of a love for the outdoors and wildlife. On one side, light-colored benches and tables provide a cozy seating area, while the other is anchored by a large bar lined with metal stools, showcasing a row of beautifully crafted wooden taps.
The brewery’s smaller details add to its whimsical, unpretentious vibe. Pairs of shoes dangle playfully from the ceiling, a welcoming fireplace greets you at the entrance, and vibrant holiday decorations seem to spill from every corner.

Our Brewing Company has built its reputation on crafting small-batch brews that prioritize creativity and experimentation. Among their fan favorites are The Careless Whisper IPA, a bold, hoppy beer with refreshing citrus notes, and The Sherlock, a rich milk stout with intriguing hints of coffee and pipe tobacco. While the nanobrewery doesn’t serve food, patrons can order from local Holland restaurants to pair with their drinks. The brewery also features local wine, cider, specialty bourbon, and handcrafted cocktails, ensuring there’s something for everyone.

The Biergarten behind the taproom offers a nice escape during Holland’s warmer months. The patio features several small, circular stone tables embossed with the brewery’s logo, paired with vibrant green metal chairs that extend Our Brewing’s signature style. Adding to its charm, there’s a sticker-covered door showcasing logos from fellow breweries.
Events at Our Brewing Company may be sporadic, but they are often centered around trivia nights, emo-themed gatherings, and anniversary celebrations. Despite the limited schedule—and an early 10 p.m. closing time—the brewery fosters a sense of inclusion in Holland, offering a welcoming space to share a drink and connect with friends, even for a brief visit.
Hops at 84 East
What I ordered: Cheboygan Blood Orange Honey

Just a short walk away is a brewery that couldn’t be any more different: Hops at 84 East, a Holland staple since 1993. Rather than brewing their own craft beer, Hops focuses on curating an impressive and ever-changing selection of craft beers, featuring 60 taps showcasing flavors from Michigan and across the U.S. This makes Hops an ideal destination for beer enthusiasts eager to sample a wide variety of Michigan-based brews and beyond—all in one visit.
At Hops at 84 East, the taps feature a rotating lineup of flavors from some of Michigan’s finest breweries, including Founders, Grand Armory, Odd Side, Perrin, Saugatuck, and Brewery Vivant. In addition to its impressive beer selection, Hops boasts a diverse food menu. From cheesy shareables to sandwiches, wood-fired pizzas, and the ever-changing “sausage of the week”.
Central to the experience is the massive curved bar, an iconic piece of Hops’ history, crafted from reclaimed materials from around Holland. Behind the bar, all 60 taps line the wall, inviting patrons to explore Michigan through the craft beers. The interior of Hops feels elevated. Solid brick walls coupled with the expansive bar lend a timeless feel, and the floors are glossy and warm.

Hops steps up to enhance Holland’s nightlife with live music events on weekends and drink specials on Thursdays, both that often outlast the hours of other bars. Open until midnight on weekends—a rarity in Holland—it’s the perfect spot to wrap up your evening. The spacious and inviting seating layout is designed to accommodate late-night gatherings, making Hops the go-to destination for late-night beer drinkers.
Holland, Michigan, is more than just New Holland Brewing—it’s a craft beer destination with something for every beer enthusiast. From the creative small batches of Our Brewing Company to the expansive, ever-changing tap list at Hops at 84 East, the city offers a diverse and welcoming scene for locals and visitors. Whether you’re seeking a cozy, quirky brewery to unwind or a lively spot to enjoy a late-night drink, Holland’s breweries provide the perfect mix of flavor, atmosphere, and community to West Michigan.
