The Bradbury and Scorpion Hearts Club: Wealthy Street Brews and Eastown Culture

3–5 minutes

Wealthy Street: brick roads, fluttering flags, and an exciting mix of boutiques, shops, homes, and places to have brews. Eastown in Grand Rapids welcomes everyone. Along the red brick road, the diverse lineup of cafes, breweries, distilleries, and bars goes on and on. With four cafes within a few blocks, cafe hopping on Wealthy Street is effortless and full of choices. Every cafe is different and the real adventure lies in discovering the cafes with the most personality.

An effortlessly elegant option lies in an unlikely place. Stouffer Home, a home goods and decor store in Eastown has been bringing poise to Wealthy since opening in 2018. Both impressively owned by a mother-daughter duo, the shop was impeccably decorated for Christmas inside and out. This led me straight to its connected cafe, The Bradbury (it was trending).

The Bradbury is an intimate, elegantly designed cafe, better for a quick coffee break than an extended study session. Spindly chairs gather around a few small marble tables accented by green and gold tones. Even with the traffic and chatter the plants, fabrics, and inviting aromas send the coffee drinker to a quiet European patio.

Despite its intimate size, The Bradbury offers an impressive range of hot and cold drinks. Espresso, drip coffee, and loose-leaf teas come with various flavor add-ins, along with a list of festive, holiday-themed specials, including Tis The Season: an espresso tonic with peppermint and cranberry.

Stoffer Home is an excellent store to peruse while enjoying your coffee to-go. The taste of the candles, books, frames, pillows, and more, is elevated and delicate. Shopping on Wealthy Street is rewarding, even within the short trek between The Bradbury and Scorpion Hearts Club. Alongside its cafes, you’ll find an apothecary, several clothing boutiques, an outdoor gear shop, and more. The spirit of Grand Rapids comes alive on the stretch between the Bradbury and Scorpion Hearts Club.

Lunch on Wealthy: Bites Between Brews

Wealthy Street is hub of heritage when it comes to a meal. Within a short stroll, you’ll find standout options like Donkey Taqueria, The Winchester, and Zivio, each offering a unique dining experience. Just a bit further into Eastown, you’ll discover an array of choices—Indian cuisine, artisanal pizza, hearty sandwiches—ensuring there’s something to perfectly complement your brew.

Scorpion Hearts Club Dining Room

Scorpion Hearts Club, formerly Sparrow’s Coffee, retains the same ownership but has undergone a fresh rebranding since its takeover in January 2023. Scorpion Hearts now appeals to a specific clientele: the artists, dreamers, and visionaries. Their website features a note: “FREE COFFEE FOR TOURING BANDS” and upon entering, the decor immediately sets the tone—a pair of cushioned chairs sit around a table with a record player and a basket of vinyl records.

The story of the rebranding is a heartbreaking one, with growth after grief, fragility, and inner ferocity at the center. The cafe’s owner, after the loss of her husband and the father of her children, describes her “scorpion heart” as a symbol of resilience and inner strength, and the inspiration for the new cafe. Stickers near the register feature golden scorpions, the cafe name, and the quote, “Coffee for Badass Dreamers”.

Plants, jars with loose-leaf tea, spices, and twinkling lights surround the menu, giving an atmosphere that’s both hipster and antique. Lattes take up the majority of the menu with creative flavors centered around espresso. Highlights include Lady Stardust, a latte with lavender and honey, and Pink Rabbits, a coconut sweetened-condensed milk latte with rose syrup–just two of the fun and flavorful coffee options.

Beyond the Brew

The coffee shop’s spacious dining room offers the perfect setting for both solo study sessions and group gatherings. Behind the tables, shelves are filled with quirky merchandise, including prints, books, stickers, jewelry, and records—many sourced from local artists in Grand Rapids. That’s not all–Scorpion Hearts Club hosts events for lovers of evening coffee. Comedy shows, poetry readings, and live music just being the most recent. Scorpion Hearts Club exuded an atmosphere of comfort, support, and spirit.

The Bradbury and Scorpion Hearts Club couldn’t be any more different, but they seemed to complete the Grand Rapids experience. The Bradbury’s quiet elegance contrasts with Scorpion Hearts creativity, and a few blocks apart, they embody the inclusive and ever-evolving character of Eastown. A coffee here and an espresso there compliments any trip to Wealthy Street warmly.
